Content Management

Create channels, organize series and episodes, manage homework and tests, and publish educational content.

Content Hierarchy

All educational content on the RokuChannel platform is organized in a three-level hierarchy. Understanding this structure is essential for creating and managing content effectively.

Channel

The top-level container. A channel represents a subject area, course, or content provider (e.g., "Advanced Mathematics" or "Science Lab").

Series

A group of related episodes within a channel. Series act like chapters or modules, organizing content into logical learning sequences.

Episode

The individual content unit. Each episode contains a video asset and can have attached homework assignments or tests for assessment.

Content Creation Workflow

Follow this pipeline to go from an empty channel to published content available to students on both Roku TV and the web:

CONTENT CREATION WORKFLOW 1. Create Channel Define name, subject, description, thumbnail 2. Add Series Create modules or chapter groups 3. Upload Video Assets MP4/MOV files, auto-transcoding 4. Create Episodes Link videos, set order & metadata 5a. Attach Homework Assignments & due dates 5b. Attach Tests Questions & scoring rules 6. Publishing Schedule Set release dates or publish now 7. Publish Review & activate content 8. Live on Roku + Web Students can access content Main Pipeline Assessment Branch Published Output Content flows from creation through assessment attachment to publication

Managing Channels

Channels are the top-level organizational unit for your educational content. Each channel represents a distinct subject, course, or content category.

  1. Create a New Channel

Navigate to the Admin Portal and click "New Channel." Provide a channel name, description, subject category, grade level range, and upload a thumbnail image (recommended: 1280x720 resolution).

  2. Edit Channel Details

Update the channel name, description, thumbnail, or metadata at any time from the channel settings page. Changes to published channels take effect immediately.

  3. Publish or Unpublish

Toggle the channel visibility. Published channels appear on the Roku TV app and web platform. Unpublished channels are hidden from students but retain all content and data.

Series & Episodes

Within each channel, organize your content into series (groups of related episodes) and individual episodes (the actual video lessons).

Organizing Content: Drag and drop series and episodes to reorder them. Students will see content in the order you define, making it easy to create sequential learning paths.

Episode Metadata: Each episode includes a title, description, duration estimate, difficulty level, and optional learning objectives. Rich metadata helps students find the right content and understand what they will learn.

Video Assets

Video assets are the core media files that power your episodes. The platform handles transcoding and optimization automatically.

Feature Details
Supported Formats MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV -- files are transcoded to adaptive bitrate HLS for streaming
Maximum File Size 5 GB per video file; larger files can be split into multiple episodes
Transcoding Automatic -- uploaded videos are processed into multiple quality levels (360p, 720p, 1080p)
Thumbnails Auto-generated from video content, or upload a custom thumbnail image
Captions Upload SRT or VTT subtitle files; auto-captioning available for English content

Homework Management

Homework assignments can be attached to any episode to reinforce learning. Students complete assignments through the web companion app after watching the associated video.

  • Creating Assignments: Define the assignment title, instructions, and any attached resources (PDFs, links, or reference materials).
  • Setting Due Dates: Choose a fixed due date or set a relative deadline (e.g., "7 days after enrollment"). Late submission policies can be configured per assignment.
  • Submission Types: Accept text responses, file uploads, or multiple-choice answers depending on the assignment type.
  • Grading Rubrics: Define point values and grading criteria. Auto-grading is available for multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions.

Test Management

Tests provide formal assessments that measure student understanding. The platform supports multiple question types and flexible scoring rules.

Multiple Choice

Single or multi-select answers with optional answer explanations. Auto-graded instantly upon submission.

True / False

Simple binary questions for quick knowledge checks. Include optional explanations for each answer.

Short Answer

Open-ended text responses requiring manual review. Set word limits and provide answer guidelines for graders.

Matching

Pair items from two columns. Useful for vocabulary, definitions, and concept mapping exercises.

Scoring Rules: Configure passing scores, point weighting per question, time limits, and the number of allowed attempts. Results are automatically recorded in the gradebook.

Grade Management

The grading system provides a centralized view of all student submissions, scores, and progress. Administrators and teachers can review, override, and export grades.

  1. View Submissions

Access the Grades dashboard to see all homework and test submissions. Filter by student, channel, assignment, or date range.

  2. Grade Manually

For short answer and essay-type submissions, review the student response and assign a score. Add feedback comments that the student can view.

  3. Override Auto-Grades

If a student disputes an auto-graded answer or if you need to grant partial credit, you can manually adjust the score for any question.

  4. Export Reports

Download grade reports as CSV or PDF files for record-keeping. Reports can be filtered by channel, series, student, or date range.

Content Status Lifecycle

Every piece of content moves through a defined lifecycle. Understanding these states helps you manage your publishing pipeline:

Status Description Visibility Actions Available
Draft Content is being created or edited. Not visible to students or the public. Admins only Edit, Submit for Review, Delete
Review Content has been submitted for editorial or quality review before publication. Admins & Reviewers Approve, Reject (back to Draft), Edit
Published Content is live and visible to enrolled students on Roku TV and the web platform. All enrolled users Unpublish, Archive, Edit (minor)
Archived Content has been retired. Hidden from new students but still accessible to those who previously enrolled. Previously enrolled only Restore to Draft, Permanently Delete
Best Practice Always use the Review status before publishing new content. This ensures a second set of eyes checks for accuracy, formatting, and quality before students can access the material.
